The New year is here and summer will be here before you know it. If you didn’t get around to your spring cleaning or are in need of another good clean, you’re like most of us. It’s not too late to get our lives in order! Not just by cleaning your house, but your life. You don’t want your house nor your mind to be dirty and cluttered. Of course, getting your life together isn’t simple. There are some things you must do to prepare yourself.
1. Picture how you would like your life to be organized
It’s important to establish in your mind what your ideal, organized life would be like. Compare it with where you are currently, and after that, find out the steps you will need to get there. How big are the tasks that you need to complete? Estimate how long it will take you to get to the point you want to be at. Having an end goal in mind and a plan to get there is integral to getting your life in order, because without a plan, you’re planning to fail. I have found that the tasks I have successfully accomplished are those that have realistic, yet challenging goals. In other words, make sure your goal is not too out of reach, but at the same time, you still have to push yourself to reach it. This makes you feel more accomplished in the end.
Ask yourself questions like:
– What things do I want to de-clutter?
– Which of my problems are the most urgent?
– Which are the least urgent?
– How big of a change will doing these things make?
And most importantly, ask yourself WHY are you taking steps to improve your life. Without a good reason to motivate you, you may lose direction and waste precious time and energy.
2. Categorize and make lists
What would you like to get organized in your life? Sometimes, there is more than your house to clean up. You may want to de-clutter your time, your mind, and relationships. You may have goals you want to accomplish that will help improve your life, such as getting in shape, picking up a new hobby, or contributing to your community.
Make a spreadsheet with different categories of areas in life you want to organize. For example, you could make one category on your spreadsheet be “Relationships” and make a subcategory of “Forgive x person”.
3. Make a schedule
After you’ve identified the areas in your life you’d like to improve, start scheduling. Manage your time. Make sure you allot a reasonable amount of time for each individual task you want to complete. The time it takes to complete a task can vary from person to person, so don’t feel bad if some things take you longer than others. If you ever feel like you’re moving too fast, slow down a bit for your own sake, but don’t lose momentum!
When you wake up, what is the first thing you want to get done? Before you go to bed at night, what things do you want to have accomplished? What is the ideal time of day you want to accomplish something?
Additionally, do be sure to schedule free-time for yourself. Start slow, don’t wear yourself out. At the same time, you want to push yourself a bit more each day.
4. Monitor your progress
When you get to the top of the mountain, you deserve to enjoy the view. It may be helpful to keep a journal or some type of log. That way, you will be able to compare where you started to where you are now in life, and determine how much more things you need to accomplish to meet your end goal. Constantly be in the present but also be mentally preparing for the next step.
