“Why should I care about future generations? What have they ever done for me?”
— Groucho Marx
If we’re honest…
that question probably crosses more minds than we’d like to admit.
Because life is busy.
We’re working, parenting, managing homes, trying to stay afloat — and sometimes thinking about the future of the planet feels far away from the reality of today.
But then…
You look around.
And you can see it.
Things are different.
How My Perspective Changed
I’ll be the first to admit — I wasn’t always thinking about the environment.
I used to:
- overspend
- waste food
- not think twice about littering
- move through life without considering the impact
And honestly… that came from how I grew up.
I was raised in the inner city of Chicago.
We didn’t have backyards.
We didn’t have trees lining the block.
So the connection to “nature” wasn’t something that was naturally taught or experienced.
It wasn’t until later — in college and adulthood — that I started to really understand the world around me.
What Changed for Me as a Mother

Everything shifted when I became a mom.
Because now it wasn’t just about me anymore.
It became about:
- what my child experiences
- what she learns
- what she values
- and what kind of world she inherits
And I realized something simple but powerful:
The small things we do today… shape what our children care about tomorrow.
It Doesn’t Have to Be Perfect
Let me say this clearly — because I know how moms think.
You don’t have to:
- overhaul your entire life
- be perfectly “green”
- or do everything right
This is about awareness.
This is about intention.
This is about doing what you can, with what you have.
And bringing your children into that process.
4 Simple Ways to Celebrate Earth Day (2026 Edition)
1. Start a Small Garden (Even Indoors)

It doesn’t have to be big.
Use:
- planters
- old containers
- small pots by a window
Plant something simple:
- herbs
- strawberries
- tomatoes
There is something special about watching your child grow something… and then eat it.
It teaches:
- patience
- care
- connection
And honestly? You might discover you have a little green thumb too.
2. Let Them Get Outside (and a Little Dirty)

We don’t see it enough anymore.
Kids outside… just being kids.
Let them:
- take off their shoes
- touch the grass
- explore
- play without structure
This is how they connect to the world around them.
Not through lectures…
but through experience.
3. Take a Walk, Ride, or Explore Your City

You don’t need a full plan.
Just step outside.
- take a walk
- ride bikes
- visit a park
- explore your neighborhood
And while you’re out…
Talk to them.
Ask them:
“What do you notice?”
“What do you like about being outside?”
Their answers might surprise you.
4. Create Something Together

Get creative.
Use what you already have:
- boxes
- bottles
- paper
- recyclables
Turn it into:
- art
- planters
- little projects
And while you’re creating…
Talk about the future.
Ask them what kind of world they want to grow up in.
Urban Mommy Reflection Moment
Before you move on, take a moment for yourself.
Because this isn’t just about the earth…
It’s about legacy.
Reflect on this:
- What habits am I modeling for my child?
- What do I want them to care about?
- What small changes can I start today?
Sometimes the best way to process these things is to slow down and write.
That’s why I created my guided journal through Joseph House Books — to give women a space to reflect, reset, and reconnect with what matters most.

Because the life we’re building today… becomes the story they carry tomorrow.
Final Thoughts
Caring about the future doesn’t have to feel overwhelming.
It can look like:
- planting something small
- going outside
- having a conversation
- being a little more intentional
Because what we do today…
Matters.
Not just for us.
But for the children watching…
learning…
and growing into the next generation.
