As a first-generation mother, the weight of our ancestors’ dreams and sacrifices can sometimes feel overwhelming. We carry within us the hopes of our parents and the aspirations of generations past, all while navigating the uncharted territory of being the first in our family to pursue higher education and succeed in a world that often feels unfamiliar.
The pressure to excel, to break barriers, to shatter ceilings can be both a driving force and a heavy burden. We strive not only for ourselves but for those who came before us and for those who will come after us. The weight of expectations, both internal and external, can sometimes feel like a mountain on our shoulders, threatening to crush our spirit and dim our light.

But amidst the struggle to meet and exceed these expectations, it is crucial to remember one simple truth – we must do it for us. We must pursue our dreams, our passions, and our goals not out of obligation or duty, but out of a genuine desire to fulfill our own potential and live a life that is true to our authentic selves.
It is okay to release the burden of carrying the hopes and dreams of our family on our own shoulders. It is okay to set boundaries, to prioritize our own well-being, and to carve out a path that is uniquely ours. It is okay to pursue success for the simple joy of achievement and fulfillment, rather than as a means of proving our worth or validating our existence.
We owe it to ourselves to live a life that is rich in meaning, purpose, and joy. We owe it to ourselves to pursue our passions, to chase our dreams, and to embrace the journey of self-discovery with courage and resilience. We owe it to ourselves to not just survive, but to thrive – to bloom into the fullness of who we are meant to be.

So, dear first-generation mothers, let us release the weight of expectations that do not belong to us. Let us embrace the freedom to pursue our own happiness, our own fulfillment, and our own success on our own terms. Let us be kind to ourselves, patient with ourselves, and compassionate towards ourselves as we navigate the complexities of being pioneers in our own right.
Let us remember that our worth is not defined by the achievements of our ancestors or the accolades of society, but by the love, passion, and resilience that burns brightly within us. Let us stand tall, stand proud, and stand fierce as we journey forward, not for the approval of others, but for the pure joy of becoming the best version of ourselves.
